Oooh! Stephanie, I really enjoyed this--- so much to think about the Dark! I too have The Dark by Lemony Snicket/Jon Klassen-- it is good! I’m trying to rethink my relationship to the dark. As I always feel that it is a time that I can’t do anything. I can’t go outside. It is too dark. It is too late. There is nothing more to be done. But that is soooo not true! You’ve inspired me to want to make the most of the dark! I never really used to be a candle person, but I think they might make for some really good ambience!

I love candles! Though sometimes I need to be reminded to light them! That’s why ritual works so well for me-the lighting means something , like focus or reflection or rest

Great post, Stephanie--and several of your favorites are my favorites, too...especially The Dark, Wild Things and The Westing Game. I haven't read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane yet so will have to check that out!

I didn't finish Kate DiCamillo's nearly-newest, The Beatryce Prophecy - also set in the Dark Ages (go figure!) in time for posting, but I just did, and need to add that to the recommendations

I love dark mornings! I try to not turn on any bright lights until the sun is fully up, which means I make tea by the little stove light and read in my studio by candle light. Candles and strings of lights can get me through the dreariest of seasons!

Also, I don't typically reach for kid-lit (now that I'm no longer teaching school), but maybe I'll give it a go! I liked your book reviews. 🤓

I agree about easing from dark into light-it’s a way of “taking time” that feels very natural and comforting to me and invites reflection (it even sometimes works while out running toward a sunrise, but is better with tea and a fire I think 😊

I’m all for you returning back to children’s lot for at least a visit. One of my favorite author-mentors says “children are whole people who deserve whole, good stories” and it’s true-there is some amazingly well-written, thoughtful, touching work out there, targeted at kids but FOR everyone
